UR-Golf Blog Entry #18: Wesley Bryan vs The PGA Tour

The Double-Standard of the PGA Tour

The BryanBros are two of the most popular people in the YouTube golf creator space. Both great players in their own right, George and Wesley Bryan started out depending on posting videos on social media to fund their dreams to play on the PGA Tour. Whether it was through epic trick-shot videos, being featured on The Big Break, or playing golf’s greatest venues in their “Major Cut” series, they continue to produce and seek every opportunity they can get to play golf. Wesley, the younger of the two brothers, is a PGA Tour winner of the 2017 RBC Heritage, and is frequently making starts on the PGA and Korn Ferry Tours.

Being content creators, they are also eligible to play in Creator Classics hosted by the PGA Tour at iconic tournament venues, the most recent being at TPC Sawgrass, won by Grant Horvat. With so many doors being opened to golf influencers and creators becoming household names, LIV Golf recently decided to follow in the PGA Tour’s footsteps and host their own Creator Classic, which they called The Duels. This event featured a mix of 12 different content creators (including Wesley Bryan and Grant Horvat), and LIV golf professionals in a team format.

This is where the drama begins. About 2 weeks after LIV Golf’s event, Grant Horvat announced on The Smylie Show, hosted by Smylie Kaufman, that he received an invitation to make his first PGA Tour start at the Barracuda Championship. Grant is a great amateur player and frequently does videos with both PGA Tour and LIV professionals, including Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, and Collin Morikawa.

Wesley, who has played in the same exact events as Grant, the only difference being that Wesley actually plays on the PGA Tour, only received a letter from the Tour stating that he had been “indefinitely suspended” for playing in a “non-sanctioned” event. Meaning, that he played in The Duels without permission from the PGA Tour. Wesley recently released a video saying that as a PGA Tour player, he has the right to appeal the decision by the PGA Tour, and he is planning on exercising that right.

It seems as though everybody is on Wesley’s side; even Grant Horvat Tweeted “Free Wesley” after the news was released. This is a terrible look for the PGA Tour, which is supposed to be growing the game and working towards bringing the best talent back to compete week to week on the same tour. It seems pretty contradictory to me, especially when inviting Wesley Bryan’s competitor to a tournament.
