UR-Golf Blog Entry #17: RBC Heritage @Harbor Town

Back in the Winners Circle!

What a great week for now 16x PGA Tour winner Justin Thomas. He has been trending for a couple of months now, and it’s good to see him collect his first PGA Tour win since the 2022 PGA Championship. JT won in dramatic fashion, making a 25′ putt in the first playoff hole against Andrew Novak, who had an 8′ putt to win in regulation, but didn’t touch the hole. With an opening round and course record-breaking 61 (-10), JT was propelled to the top of the leader board, following it with 69, 69, and 68 to get him to -17 and into the playoff. JT’s opening round 61 was his NINTH course record on tour. He has one 59, five 61’s, a 62, a 63, and a 65 @Winged Foot Golf Club. JT knows how to take it DEEP.

Andrew Novak has been having a great season so far. The 30-year-old, who comes from Wofford College, is still seeking his first PGA Tour victory, and it is coming. This is his third year on tour. He is currently ranked 34th in the OWGR and 15th in the FedEx Cup rankings. So far this season, he has three top-10 finishes, including a runner-up finish this week in Harbor Town. This week, Novak showed a lot of grit coming down the stretch. He didn’t have his best stuff on Sunday, but he battled his way into a playoff.

Corales Puntacana Championship

Justin Thomas wasn’t the only course record breaker this week. Joel Dahmen fired an opening round 62 (-10) at the Puntacana Corales Golf Course. Unfortunately, the strong opening round wasn’t enough for Joel Dahmen to finish the job. After bogeying his last 3 holes, Garrick Higgo snuck into the lead to collect his second PGA Tour victory.

“I think I’m in a little bit of shock, honestly,” Dahmen said after finishing in a tie for second. “It’s not how you win a golf tournament, I’ll tell you that. I don’t deserve to win it.

Korn Ferry Tour: LECOM SUNCOAST Classic

Neal Shipley from the Ohio State University collected his first Korn Ferry Tour victory on Saturday, winning on his fifth playoff hole against Lee Seung-taek. The Master’s low-am is turning into a household name. Anytime he is shown by the media, we are more than likely going to get some kind of clip or sound bite. Shipley is now 136 in the OWGR and is dominating on the PGA Tour Americas. It won’t be long now until he holds a PGA Tour card.
