I don’t know about you, but I still feel the adrenaline from Sunday’s golf. A grand slam. Now that Rory has finally done it, what’s next for golf? What will be the narrative going into the next major? Will Rory win again this year? Another major? If the future plays out perfectly, it is not outside the topic of conversation because he has won at Quail Hollow four times, and the Open Championship is being held in his home country.
Rory gets a lot of press from the media, and he is also very open and honest. He is also easily the best player in the world post-Tiger. His consistency over the last 13 years is insane. The last time he missed back-to-back cuts was in 2012. The most cuts he has missed in a season is 4 in 2017, a year where he also won once and has 11 finishes inside the top 25. This is what separates him from guys like Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. He is consistently contending. He doesn’t have “bad years” or slumps. And if he does have slumps, they only last a week.
This brings me to my next topic of conversation. Jordan Spieth is the closest to becoming the next player to complete the Grand Slam, needing only a PGA Championship. I personally don’t think he’s going to finish the job. Looking at the elite list of players who have earned that accomplishment, I just don’t see Jordan up there with them. If you had asked me from 2015 to 2017, I think everybody would have said yes to him completing the Grand Slam. But his consistency isn’t there. Of course, if he did end up winning a PGA Championship, I would be very happy for him.
Now onto the political side of golf. 2 weeks ago, Grant Horvat–winner of the PGA Tour Creator Classic @TPC Sawgrass–and Wesley Bryan, who plays professionally and creates golf content with his brother George, participated in the LIV Duels event in Miami, during LIV Golf’s tournament. Wesley Bryan, who is on and off the PGA Tour, received a suspension, and it has not been established for how long that suspension will be. Grant Horvat, however, who has played in all of the same creator events as Wes announced on The Smylie Show, that he had been invited to play in the PGA Tour’s Barracuda Championship. Does this seem backward to anyone else? Maybe a little hypocritical? Just asking.
