It’s finally here. The best week of the year. Masters Week. There’s so much to look forward to this week in the golf world, so many great story lines, and it all starts today. With such a big week ahead of us, and so much that happened last week, I figured today’s post would be a good opportunity to recap all of what has been going on in the world of golf.
Conditions were challenging at the Valero Texas Open @TPC San Antonio, and Brian Harman collected his fourth PGA Tour victory at -9 (66, 66, 72, 75). He credited his perseverance to his last win at the Open Championship. It will be interesting to see how he plays at Augusta where he has only made two cuts and his best finish is t-12. Other notable finishes include Ryan Gerard who finished at -6, solo 2nd, Maverick McNealy–who I haven’t realized cracked the top 10 in the OWGR–finished T-3 at -5, alongside Andrew Novak.
Heading into The Masters, LIV Golf held its event at Trump National Doral, where Marc Leishman picked up his first LIV Golf victory with a 3-day total of -6. His win also propelled his team, Ripper GC, to an 8 stroke win at +4. Trailing closely behind were a couple of Masters Champions–Charl Schwartzel finished solo 2nd at -5, while Sergio Garcia who finished solo 3rd at -4. Sergio is in good form heading to Augusta with a win, a solo 3rd, and T-6 finish so far this season. It will be interesting to see if he enters the conversation for a captains pick for the upcoming Ryder Cup in October.
Carla Bernat Escuder of Spain won the Augusta National Women’s Amateur in stunning fashion. Finishing at -12 to secure her victory by 1 stroke over 16-year-old Asterisk Talley, Escuder displayed impressive consistency with 3-straight rounds of 68 (-4). This was her third straight appearance at the ANWA, and she now joins an elite group of Spaniards to win at Augusta, alongside Jose Maria Olazabal, Seve Ballesteros, Sergio Garcia, and Jon Rahm. Escuder is a senior at Kansas State University, and is planning on turning professional after this season.
Recent news on the PGA Tour and LIV Golf merge suggests that the PIF offered to invest $1.5 billion into the PGA Tour, with the condition that LIV Golf would remain intact. Jay Monahan and the PGA Tour declined this offer stating “We will not do so [create one entity with all the top players playing on one tour] in a way that diminishes the strength of our platform. So while we’ve removed some hurdles, others remain. But like our fans, we still share the same sense of urgency to get to a solution.” This is ironic because Yassir and Monahan have been “in talks” for the last 3 years, and have not come any closer to a solution.
