UR-Golf Blog Entry #13: Could This Be The First LIV Golfer to Come to The PGA Tour?

With talks of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the PGA Tour working towards an agreement and merging, and the first major of the year right around the corner, we will see PGA Tour and LIV golfers competing together for the first time since last years Open Championship. However, last weeks winner on the DP World Tour might find a way to pave the road to be the first LIV golfer to earn their PGA Tour card. As an amateur, Eugenio Chacarra was ranked as high as number 2 in the WGAR while playing at Oklahoma State. The Spaniard turned pro to accept his offer from LIV and play for Fireball GC with team captain Sergio Garcia, Abraham Ancer, and David Puig.

Eugenio Chacarra went on to win his first LIV title in his 5th start, but his struggles for the rest of the season left him unsigned in the postseason. He now aims to compete on the PGA Tour. Chacarra voiced his frustration when he was left unsigned and decided to leave LIV Golf, saying, “When I joined LIV, they promised [Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points] and majors. But it didn’t happen. I trusted them. I was the first young guy, then the others came after I made the decision. But OWGR and majors still haven’t happened. I saw you last year when they pulled the bid. It’s frustrating, but I’m excited for the new opportunity and to see where my game takes me.”

“I see what it’s like to win on the PGA Tour and how your life changes. How you get major access and ranking points. On LIV, nothing changes, there is only money. It doesn’t matter if you finish thirtieth or first, only money.”

– Eugenio Chacarra after the 2024 season

Having been searching for starts on the DP World Tour through sponsor’s invitations, Chacarra was able to win last week in The Hero Indian Open in New Dehli. The win came with a full-time membership to the DP World Tour through the 2027 season and a full schedule in the 2025 season, providing him with the opportunity to work his way up the Race of Dubai standings (the European equivalent to the FedEx Cup) and a chance to earn his PGA Tour card for the 2026 season.

“It means everything,” Chacarra said Sunday after the win. “I decided when I was an amateur to go to another side of golf [LIV]. Coming out [of LIV], I didn’t know where I was going to play but I stayed patient… I know when I play my best, I am one of the best players in the world. I’ve already proved that. It’s just awesome. It needs to sink in, but I’m really proud, and I’m just happy.”

A former LIV golfer recently played in The Players Championship, having been on a similar journey to Eugenio Chacarra, but is full-time on the DP World Tour. Laurie Canter is a former LIV golfer who now plays on the DP World Tour, and was able to get his world ranking inside the top 50, earning him a spot at TPC Sawgrass.

Chacarra now hopes to follow a similar trajectory, using opportunities on the DP World Tour to work his way toward PGA Tour status. His journey reflects the shifting landscape of professional golf as former LIV players navigate their way back into traditional tours and major championships.
