UR-Golf Blog Entry #11: Creators Changing the Game

Is This the Future of Golf?

Golf is at its peak on social media. Content creators flood Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, shaping a new era of the sport. Kids are in a world where they aspire to be more like Grant Horvat than Tiger Woods. When does it end? What could possibly replace golf in the sports content creator space? Right now, nothing seems close.

Even I’m stuck at a crossroads–I will sit down for dinner and end up watching Trent and Jersey Jerry from Barstool Sports struggle to break 100, or Bobby Fairways and Fat Perez attempt to take down 100 tacos with Jon Rahm. With so many people entering the creative space, it is interesting to see how they coexist.

People are drawn to golf because it’s so relatable. Even when watching the PGA Tour, people enjoy watching pros struggle– because it shows that they are human. Why hasn’t any other sport tapped into this same formula?

Grant Horvat- The Creator King

If you haven’t heard the name Grant Horvat yet, he is currently on the biggest heater of any golf influencer. A former college golfer at Palm Beach Atlantic University, Grant first gained recognition as a member of Good Good Golf, one of the original YoutTube golf collectives. After a few years with the group, Grant decided that it would be in his best interest to split off from the group and do his own thing. This is probably the best decision he’s ever made. Since then, Grant has recorded videos with Adam Scott, Jon Daly, Tony Finau, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Nelly Korda, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, and most recently, Justin Thomas (just to name a few). Grant is also a part owner of Primo Golf Apparel and Takomo Golf Clubs.

For readers who are primarily invested in the PGA Tour and the Golf Channel, you may have seen the Creator Classic at TPC Sawgrass before the Players Championship. The Creator Classic is a new initiative that integrates content creators into PGA Tour events, with a season-long series of tournaments at Tour stops The tournament at Sawgrass was an eight-hole stroke play competition that concluded at the infamous 17th-hole. The winner? Grant Horvat– thought the only prize was bragging rights.

To add more kindling to the fire Grant has going, on Wednesday, March 26, it was announced that Grant Horvat will be participating in The Duels: Miami hosted by LIV Golf–”a high-energy showdown, pairing six of LIV Golf’s biggest stars with six of the world’s most popular golf content creators, taking place on April 5.” Other influencers participating include George and Wesley Bryan, Luke Kwon, Rick Shiels, and Fat Perez. This event is basically LIV’s attempt to put on their own creator classic. With how many videos Grant has made with Phil, I am curious to see if there is any talks of Grant following in Rick Shiels’ footsteps and signing a contract with LIV.

Texas Children Houston Open @Memorial Park

With Augusta just around the corner, players are starting to gear up for a major championship.

My first pick this week is Aaron Rai (+3000). Rai has been very steady this year, with four top-25s and one top-10. After finishing T7 last year, Rai’s consistent ball striking should put him in position to have good looks at birdie and hopefully put him in contention on Sunday.

I think a popular favorite this week is Min Woo Lee (+3500). The chef has been cooking this season but hasn’t been able to close yet. Lee has played well on some tough courses this year including The Players Championship, Cognizant Classic, WM Phoenix Open, and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am. A breakthrough win this week would be a big confidence boost heading into the Masters.

My final pick this week is Jake Knapp (+8000). Knapp has been solid this year, only missing two cuts. His 59 at the Cognizant Classic proves that he has the firepower to go low if his driver is dialed. 11th in SG: Putting combined with 53rd in SG: Approach is a strong combination this week as the course sets up well for long hitters who can control the spin on their irons.
