Welcome to the first entry of the Ur-Golf Blog. This is a space where I aim to share golf news, hot takes, club reviews, course reviews, and more. The idea of Ur-Golf is not only to supply you with your own golf media, but it is a medium for people who live and breathe golf. Golf as an entertainment industry is BOOMING right now. Not only in professional golf but through content creation and media consumption. We are living in a day and age where millions of people are watching Bob Does Sports play with 2x major winner Bryson DeChambeau on YouTube instead of watching the PGA Tour from week to week. With so many options for entertainment at our disposal, it is almost overwhelming to try and figure out if you want to watch the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, the TGL, or throw on a Rick Shiels video.
UR-Golf is a place where I aim to focus on everything that happens in the golf world and share my own experiences and opinions as well. With that being said, I appreciate all support and feedback regarding my writing, and I can’t wait to share more!
Whether you know a lot about the game of golf or not, most people understand that golf is hard. Golf is a game where you experience the highest highs and the lowest lows, usually all within the same round. A lot of people have heard golf be used as a metaphor for life. In a round of golf, you embark on a journey where you have no idea what is in store. It could be the greatest round of golf in your life, or it can be the worst. You can have the most birdies you’ve ever had and still make an 11. Just as it is in life, learning how to move on from the bogeys is how you grow.
Nobody is more vocal about their own ups and downs in the game than PGA Tour member Max Homa. Max played for the University of Cal, Berkeley, and won the individual NCAA title in 2013, just before turning professional that same year. Homa then struggled to earn/keep his PGA Tour for the next 6 years until he finally had a breakthrough victory at the Wells Fargo Championship in 2019. He went on to win 5 more times on the PGA Tour and once on the DP World Tour, with his last win being in January of 2023.
In his preparation for the Genesis Invitational this week at Torrey Pines, a tournament he had won in 2021 at Riviera Country Club, he was very honest about how he felt about the current state of his golf game:
I do believe if you wake up every day trying to get 1 or 2% better, when it clicks it will be great.
– Max Homa
As a competitive golfer, I understand the feeling of uncertainty that Max Homa is going through. He later goes on to say “If I never have another good result again that would be a massive bummer, but… I could rest easy knowing I am doing everything I possibly can to win.” This is so applicable to everybody in every walk of life. Being able to find something that pushes you to want to wake up and do the very best you can everyday is what it means to have passion. Even if you fail, sometimes the biggest reward is the journey. As golfer’s our expectations don’t always meet reality, but that doesn’t mean we stop searching for our potential.
Here are some of my picks this week at Torrey Pines-
One of my favorites to finish in the top 20 this week is Shane Lowry (+4000, outright). Lowry had a tough start in his last attempt in the Farmers Insurance with a missed cut but followed it up with a 2nd place finish at Pebble Beach. With weather looking dicey over the next couple of days in San Diego, the tough conditions are favorable for the Irishman.
Jason Day is due. 4/4 cuts made so far this season with a top-10 and a top-20, and a previous winner at the Farmers Insurance Open, Mr. Day plays Torrey Pines well; however, last time he played here, he did have to tape up the Malbon on the back of his shirt…
Finally, my dark horse this week is Taylor Moore. Taylor has been playing well so far this year and has had 2 top-10s so far, including one at the Farmers Insurance earlier this year, and is coming off of a T-9 finish at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. With one career win, Taylor Moore is a money-making machine on the PGA Tour and is good to keep an eye on this week.
I do appreciate you reading what I have to say for my first of what I hope is many posts. I hope to get into news on LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, as well as cover what happens this week at Torrey Pines. Any feedback is appreciated, and ideas are also accepted!
Thank you,
Jake Yarbrough

Surely
Great job Jake! Check out Dan Grieve on YouTube when you get a chance, that’s what I’ve been watching as I continue to enjoy working on the flaws in my game. Cheers!
